Summer 2023 Discovery Club and Access 21 Programming

 

Extended-Day Discovery Club (current grades K-8) in collaboration with the Summer Learning Academy and the Summer Language Institute academic morning programs.

Dates: July 10-August 3, Monday through Thursday

Students in grades K-8 who attend one of our grant-funded sites, Bradford, Golden Hill, Pentucket Lake, or Tilton Elementary Schools; Consentino, Nettle, Tilton Upper, or Whittier Middle Schools and enroll in the Summer Learning Academy or the Summer Language Institute academic morning programs have the option to stay for lunch and then participate in a hands-on enrichment program from 12:00-3:00 pm at the same school (Consentino, Hunking, and Whitter Schools). There will be one Summer Language Insititue extended-day class at Haverhill High School from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm.

Stand-Alone Enrichment-only Discovery Club/Access 21 (current grades 5-12)

Engaging hands-on enrichment-only programs that are offered in the morning for students who are not required to enroll in a morning academic progam. 

DATES AND TIMES

Grade Level: Current grades 5 – 12 (depending on enrichment)

Programs offered:

Fishing and Ecosystems (open to students currently in grades 5-8; 8:00 am to 12:00 pm) 

There are no better summer activities than fishing and hiking! Learn the basics of both and go fishing and hiking locally. Beginners and those who have never fished before are welcome. All fishing supplies will be provided. Learn about the ecosystems of New England.  LOCATION: Whittier Middle School

Glee Club (open to students currently in grades 8-12; 8:30 am -12:30 pm)

Join Glee Club for a collaborative summer spectacular! The production is a classic jukebox musical, using hit songs to tell an original story! Students will contribute in the creative process, and learn the fundamentals of musical theatre. Students will help create a brand new show for the end of the summer session at Haverhill High School.  LOCATION: Whittier Middle School

Musical Theater (open to students currently in grades 5-8; 8:00 am to 12:00 pm)

If you have ever dreamed of being on stage, this is your chance! Everyone will have a part! Everyone will learn character development, voice projection, expression, songs, and dances. Finish with a performance in full costume for family members. There will be a final performance at the end of the session in August.  LOCATION: To be determined

Outdoor Art & Gardening (open to students currently in grades 5-8; 8:00 am to 12:00 pm)

Would you like to learn how to grow plants in a garden? Make stepping stones for your garden? Create outdoor art pieces to spruce up the school? See how fruits and vegetables grow? Spend time outside drawing the world around us? Make dipping oil from the herbs in your garden? Possibly landscape the courtyard at the Consentino School? Then come join us this summer for the outdoor art & gardening program!  LOCATION: Consentino School

Outdoor Recreation & Healthy Living (open to students currently in grades 5-8; 8:00 am to 12:00 pm) 

If you love the outdoors in the summer, check this out! One goal of this activity will be to introduce the sport of Disc Golf. Other activities may include flag football, wiffle ball, and hiking at Winnekenni Park. We will also learn how to make some healthy meals and snacks.  LOCATION: Whittier Middle School

Robotics (open to students currently in grades 5-12; Time to be determined)

Would you like to build your own “Strawbees” robot /creations using straws and connectors with a Quirkbot to make it light up and move? Or use Lego Mindstorms and program a robot to address multiple challenges? Or is there something new in the world of Robotics you want to try, let us know. Master important skills in Science, Technology and Engineering. Your Summer Robotics Club – your voice, your choice! Let’s have FUN !!!!  LOCATION: Haverhill High School

Rock Band (open to students currently in grades 5-12; 8:00 am -12:00 pm)

Are you ready? ROCK BAND offers the COMPLETE ROCK STAR EXPERIENCE! You will form a band, name and promote it! You will choose the songs or write and record songs of your own! You will perform in a live concert! ROCK BAND is open to all middle and high school singers, rappers, and instrumentalists. The live show will be presented at the end of the program. You will perform for a live audience and the show will be streamed live and posted on Facebook and YouTube. Sound awesome? It is!  LOCATION: Consentino School

STEM Career Awareness (open to students currently in grades 5-8; Time to be determined)

STEM Career Awareness is a fairly new program for current 5th – 8th grade students. Students will explore a variety of technology, engineering, healthcare, and biomedical careers through hands-on learning activities designed by current high school students. Examples of some of the summer activities that will connect to the high demand STEM Career pathways that are offered at Haverhill High School include:
● Bio-tech Activities – Crime Scene Investigation
● Healthcare Activities – First Aid, CPR, Personal Care, HIPPA Laws, Hand Hygiene
● Robotics Activities – Build Vex Bot, Program Vex Bots
● 3D Printing – Design using TinkerCad
● Programming and Web Development Activities – Game Design using Scratch
● Engineering – Create and build structures to explore multiple ways to solve a problem through real life challenges!

Cost: There is no cost for the entire 4 week (16 day) program.

MEALS
Breakfast and lunch are available at no cost.

Enrollment is limited. Applications will be accepted until May 18. After that date, students will be added to a waitlist.

The Morning Enrichment-only and Extended Day Discovery Club/Access 21 summer programs begin Monday, July 10. The last day for Morning Discovery and Extended Day will be Thursday, August 3. There is no programming on Fridays.

Morning Enrichment-only Discovery Club/Access 21 meets from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm at Consentino and Whittier; and times to be determined at Haverhill High School.  

Internship programs meet at times to be determined and start with training during the last week of June.

Extended-day Discovery meets from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm, with the exception of the Summer Language Institute class at HHS from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm.

All programs will meet Monday through Thursday.
